MARVELLOUS TOYS
As producers of the Sidmouth Folk Festival Children’s Programme, we’ve teamed up with Sidmouth C of E Primary School and Sidmouth Toy and Model Museum to bring you ‘Marvellous Toys’, a collection of new songs written by pupils and inspired by local people’s memories of their favourite toys from their childhood.
Fast As A Bullet
Hedgehog Class were inspired by the memories of Simon Frost, who talked about how exciting it was to be the must-have toy of Christmas 1964.
Here’s what Simon says about his toy:
“In 1964 the James Bond film Goldfinger was released. To celebrate the film Corgi, the die-cast car maker, brought out a gold version of the silver Aston Martin DB5 used by James Bond in the film.
While I had not seen the film as I was too young, all the boys at school were talking about the Aston Martin making it the most desirable Christmas present of the year. At Christmas I was lucky enough to be given the DB5. It was all I had dreamed of for weeks before! The model made by Corgi featured an ejector seat, a small button that made machine guns appear and another that raised th bulletproof screen. It was a triumph of model engineering, and I had many happy hours playing with the car ejecting the baddie from the passenger seat and engaging in mock fights with other model cars.
After many years of playing with the car it was packed up and given away. Seeing the same model in the Sidmouth Toy & Model Museum brought back happy memories of my childhood toy.”
